Irlen's Syndrome
Irlen Syndrome (also known as Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome) is a perceptual processing difficulty that affects how the brain interprets visual information. It is not an eye condition, but a sensitivity to certain wavelengths of light that can make reading and visual tasks uncomfortable or more difficult.
People with Irlen Syndrome may experience symptoms such as words appearing to move, blur, fade, or distort on a page. They may also be sensitive to bright light or glare, which can lead to headaches, eye strain, and fatigue when reading or working with screens.
These difficulties can impact reading speed, concentration, comprehension, and overall visual comfort, particularly in learning or workplace environments.
An Irlen screening helps identify whether these symptoms may be present and whether coloured overlays or filters could improve visual comfort and reading performance. A full assessment can then determine the most suitable support options for the individual.
Irlen's Screening
£120
This 1-hour screening assessment explores whether an individual may be experiencing symptoms associated with Irlen Syndrome, a visual processing difficulty that can affect reading comfort and visual clarity.
The assessment involves a structured series of tasks designed to identify visual stress indicators, such as sensitivity to light, visual distortion, and difficulties with reading fluency. During the session, coloured overlays are trialled to determine whether they improve visual comfort and reduce symptoms.
If appropriate, a suitable overlay is provided at the end of the assessment for continued use.
Following the screening, a concise written report (approximately 3-4 pages) is provided. This summarises the findings and includes recommendations for ongoing support and further assessment if required.
