Access Arrangements

Access arrangements are the adjustments put in place to ensure that students with specific learning difficulties or additional needs can fully demonstrate their knowledge in exams and assessments. They are designed to remove barriers to learning without giving any unfair advantage.

These arrangements may include support such as extra time, use of a reader or scribe, assistive technology, rest breaks, or smaller or separate exam settings, depending on the individual’s needs.

An access arrangements assessment helps determine whether a student meets the criteria required by exam boards and ensures that appropriate evidence is gathered to support an application.

The aim is to provide a fair and equal opportunity for all learners, allowing them to perform to the best of their ability in formal assessments.

Access Arrangement Packages for Schools

A range of flexible assessment packages are available for schools, designed to meet the varying needs of pupils and settings.

Options include half-day and full-day visits, as well as individual assessment sessions, allowing schools to choose the level of support that best suits their requirements.

Assessments can be tailored to include a variety of screening and diagnostic tools. Where appropriate, group screening sessions can also be carried out to efficiently identify pupils who may benefit from further individual assessment or targeted support.

As part of access arrangements assessments, support can also include the completion of relevant documentation, including Part 2 of Form 8, to assist schools in meeting JCQ requirements and ensuring appropriate evidence is in place for exam access arrangements.

These packages are designed to provide schools with clear, actionable insights into pupils’ learning needs, along with practical recommendations to support progress, inclusion, and exam access where appropriate.
